9sense Letters
- I am interested in your opinion on the question on the satanic way/method of handling a substance abuse problem? Obviously, Satanism and the Church of Satan’s philosophies are inconsistent with substance abuse, and I’m not asking about a vindication of drug or alcohol abuse, but how a Satanist would go about working on their own personal shortcomings, in this particular case meaning substance abuse.
A little context: I have had a drinking problem since I was 15 or 16 years old. I have a long history of alcoholism in my family and my fraternal grandmother actually died of alcohol withdrawal. I joined the Marine Corps at 18 right out of high school (which clearly did not help matters) and my habitual binge drinking continued to wreak havoc on my life until I decided I was tired of it and quit cold turkey right after my 22nd birthday.
I was sober for about 2 1/2 years, not even feeling tempted to drink. I kind of embraced a punk rock straight-edge philosophy and used the view of alcohol and drugs as being for losers as a way to mitigate any desires I might have had, and it worked astoundingly. I could go out with friends to bars and hang out with them while they drank all night and not even feel a temptation.
Fast forward a couple years later. I was getting ready to get married and decided I could have a beer or two on a special occasion, but that kind of awoke my old problems and after a few months of increasingly drinking more and more, with my now-wife warning my of how much I was drinking, I was pretty much back to my old ways. Long story short, an absinthe binge almost did some serious damage to my brand new marriage, and newly sober (again), I was wondering if you had any opinions on how a Satanist would handle a problem like this. Obviously, the responsibility is mine and mine alone (responsibility to the responsible), and I would never dream of blaming my wife, my parents, or anyone else for my actions. However, after listening to your show for a while, it seems like you might have an interesting or insightful take on it, and I am sure I am not the only Satanist in this kind of situation.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this and keep on producing a great show. Hail Satan!
