Hey Adam,

After going to class for my first week of the semester I had a thought that recurs on and off when I am in and out of relative situations: is it wrong of me to show off my intelligence in and out of the classroom when asked questions?

I was given a handout by my professor for review of basic geometry and, being that I’m in trigonometry and independently teaching myself differential calculus, it was child’s play to me. I got everything done as he was talking. When asked to work a problem on the board I got the notion I was being annoying by the professor because of me including my proof in my answer, going as far as “according to The Greek mathematician Euclid, these are equal because…..(blah blah blah)” and when I was finished he made it a point to point out that I should tone down my arrogance. I admit I take great pride in my studies but should I really be ashamed of my academic determination?

I had the same reaction by a customer I was taking care of at my job. He had asked how something works and because of my inexperience to deal with total strangers I could only explain something in the way I myself understand them, using technical information like “well sir when vacuum is applied to the engine, the sensor has a piezo crystal inside that deforms to a certain degree depending on the amount of vacuum, or load if you will. The magnitude of deformation sends a voltage signal to the engines computer to show the amount of load on the engine and as a result, a corresponding signal is sent to your electronic fuel injection control to open the injectors at a certain time and for a certain time duration.

Maybe I am arrogant like I’m trying to compensate for something but should I really be ashamed of my intelligence so much that I have to hide it?

Thanks for any advice given and don’t be afraid to hurt my feelings if need be, I can take it.
