2. Infernal Informant

Jeffrey Epstein
Jeffrey Epstein
  • Epstein Emails Reveal a Lost New York
    • https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/16/style/epstein-emails-reveal-a-lost-new-york.html
    • The newly released trove of more than 20,000 emails from Jeffrey Epstein—released by lawmakers and instantly triggering political frenzy in Washington—offers more than insight into Epstein’s connections to powerful figures. What they truly reveal is a vivid snapshot of a bygone New York power structure: a tight-knit, insular, almost mythic social world that has largely disappeared.
    • 1. A Portal Into a Vanished Manhattan Elite
      • The emails, mostly from an account Epstein began using in 2009 after his first jail sentence, chronicle a decade of communication among Manhattan’s once-dominant power brokers: billionaires, media titans, socialites, politicians, and cultural gatekeepers.
      • This was the world Epstein aspired to and ultimately infiltrated—where printed newspapers still mattered, exclusive restaurants defined status, and a small group of wealthy insiders shaped the city’s cultural pulse.
      • Epstein’s townhouse itself—described by Woody Allen as “Dracula’s castle”—served as a gathering place for many of these figures.
    • 2. Old Media’s Power and Epstein’s Access
      • Many names in Epstein’s inbox were major media figures now diminished, disgraced, or retired. The article points to:
      • Mortimer Zuckerman, then-owner of The New York Daily News, who collaborated with Epstein on failed attempts to buy New York Magazine and Radar.
      • Invitations and events saturated with power: dinners at Rao’s, The New York Observer’s 25th anniversary party co-hosted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Jared Kushner, with guests like Matt Lauer and Harvey Weinstein—men who later became emblematic of the #MeToo reckoning.
      • One of Epstein’s key links to this ecosystem was Peggy Siegal, a major publicist who funneled him articles, invitations, and introductions before her reputation collapsed due to that association.
      • Another was R. Couri Hay, a press agent who attempted to warn Epstein in 2011 that Newsweek was preparing a story on his reemergence after his 2008 conviction. Hay floated ways to influence the coverage by offering favorable sources.
      • Journalists such as Landon Thomas Jr. (The New York Times) and Michael Wolff also appear repeatedly. Thomas eventually left the Times after soliciting a donation from Epstein—an ethical breach. Wolff seems to have acted as an informal adviser, brainstorming strategies, suggesting friendly reporters, and even offering his own columns as a venue.
    • 3. Epstein’s Desperate Efforts to Manage His Reputation
      • Despite his 2008 conviction and registered sex offender status, Epstein aggressively attempted to rehabilitate his image. The emails show:
      • Attempts to get Siegal to reach out to Arianna Huffington for favorable content (she says she never did).
      • Hiring a digital consultant to bury negative stories (unsuccessfully).
      • Seeking appearances on mainstream programs like Charlie Rose’s PBS show—before Rose himself later fell to #MeToo accusations.
      • The overarching picture is a man trying to use old-world media influence to salvage his name—just as the culture shifted beneath his feet.
    • 4. The #MeToo Movement Seen From Inside Epstein’s Inbox
      • This is one of the article’s most striking themes: Epstein and his circle reacting in real time as the tide turned against powerful men.
      • Epstein wrote that “so many guys caught in the me too” were reaching out to him for advice. He noted producer Brett Ratner being taken down, and he and Wolff discussed their friend Woody Allen’s deteriorating reputation and lack of digital strategy.
      • The #MeToo movement reads in the emails like a slow apocalypse for this old guard. Men once untouchable suddenly fell one by one, and Epstein—ironically—saw his own relative reputation improve simply because so many others were also being exposed.
      • This culminates in an email to Joi Ito of MIT (who later resigned due to Epstein connections), where Epstein marvels that he had “moved slightly up the reputation ladder” and was being asked for advice daily.
    • 5. The Collapse of a World
      • Almost every person populating these exchanges has since been brought low—by scandal, retirement, cultural shifts, or professional disgrace. The article subtly emphasizes that this is not a coincidence: the digital age, transparency, and #MeToo dismantled the old network of mutual protection, gatekeeping, and reputation laundering.
      • But one person in the emails is still very much on stage: Donald Trump. And he quickly wielded the release to distance himself and redirect attention toward Democrats like Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, and Reid Hoffman.
    • 6. The Final Picture
      • The emails reveal:
        • Epstein as a connector within a shrinking, incestuous circle of power.
        • A media landscape in transition, lumbering from print-era gatekeeping to the chaotic openness of the internet.
        • A social elite unprepared for the accountability #MeToo would bring.
        • A man obsessed with his public image, desperately maneuvering even as criminal investigations closed in.
        • Ultimately, the documents do more than detail Epstein’s relationships—they serve as a time capsule. A map of a New York ecosystem that thrived for decades and collapsed almost overnight.
