Cold Open
Long before the days of the Republic. Long before the rise of the Sith and the Jedi as we know them. On a remote world in the Deep Core, an order of mystics arose: the Je’daii Order. They did not serve only light. They did not serve only dark. They served Balance.
What was the Je’daii Order? How did it shape the Force-users who would follow? And how did it eventually lead to the founding of the Jedi as we know them? Today, we journey to Tython.
Intro
Origins & Setting
The Je’daii Order arose on the planet Tython, in the Deep Core, shortly after 36,453 BBY. The pilgrims who became the Je’daii were brought there by mysterious pyramid-ships (the Tho Yor) and discovered that Tython was unusually strong in the Force.
They named the two moons of Tython Ashla (light) and Bogan (dark), and from them derived their view of the Force: light and dark as aspects of a greater whole.
Philosophy & Code
Unlike the later Jedi who would emphasise the light side and shun the dark, the Je’daii believed in balance between light and dark. They held that neither side alone was sufficient, and that true understanding came from walking the centre.
The Je’daii Code encapsulated the following ideas:
There is no ignorance; there is knowledge. There is no fear; there is power… I am the heart of the Force. I am the revealing fire of light. I am the mystery of darkness … In balance with chaos and harmony, Immortal in the Force.
They believed that Tython itself would punish imbalance with Force storms and quakes — so maintaining balance was not just philosophical, but a survival imperative.
Organization & Temples
The Je’daii were structured around nine Temples on Tython, each temple dedicated to a particular discipline — for example, the Temple of Balance (Akar Kesh), the Temple of Martial Arts (Stav Kesh), the Temple of Science (Anil Kesh), and so on.
The highest authority was the Je’daii Council (also called the Masters’ Council) made up of the nine Temple Masters. Training was rigorous. A young Force-sensitive would be a Padawan stationed at Padawan Kesh, then after completing training would undertake the “Great Journey” — a pilgrimage across all nine Temples, gaining varied skills and experience. Only after completing the Great Journey would one become a Ranger, and eventually could rise to Master.
Key Events & Decline
The Je’daii Order thrived for thousands of years, largely isolated from the wider galaxy. But their era of solitude ended with the arrival of external threats — notably the Rakata Infinite Empire. Their invasion of the Tython system threw the Order into existential crisis.
This led to what is known as the Force Wars — a schism within the Je’daii between those who leaned toward the Ashla (light) and those who embraced the Bogan (dark). The conflict devastated Tython and fractured the Order.
In the aftermath, a splinter group of Je’daii who reaffirmed the light side and renounced the dark became the Jedi Order — marking the end of the Je’daii era (around 25,783 BBY).
Legacy & Importance
Why does the Je’daii Order matter for Star Wars lore? First, they are the conceptual precursor to the Jedi. Their philosophies on the Force, their temples and training, all laid the groundwork for what followed.
Second, their emphasis on balance adds a rich nuance — the idea that wielding both light and dark is possible (dangerous, but possible). Their failure underscores why the Jedi later chose a different path: one of resisting the dark rather than integrating it.
And third, from a storytelling perspective, the Je’daii era opens a window to ancient, heroic, mythic times — millennia before the films — providing fertile ground for exploration and inspiration.
