About In Nomine

Written by Derek Pearcy + Illustrated by Dan Smith

Edited by Jeff Koke, Steve Jackson, and Susan Pinsonneault

Cover art by John Zeleznik (first printing) and Christopher Shy (second printing)

In Nomine is a modern roleplaying game in which the players take the part of celestial beings – angels and demons – as they struggle for control of humanity and themselves. The celestials, powerful though they may be, are merely pawns in a much larger game being played by their Superiors, the Archangels and Demon Princes. Based on the best-selling French RPG by the wonderfully diabolical Croc!

In Nomine won the Origins Award for Best Graphic Presentation of a Roleplaying Game, Adventure, or Supplement of 1997.

Discussion

About

Kronos, a Balseraph, presents himself as an older man with small stature. He typically refrains from speaking, but when he does, it is with authority. Kronos is the most powerful of Hell’s Princes. He doesn’t care about most of the people in the world, only those whose Destiny can be altered to their dark hand of Fate. Kronos and his servitors are the only demons with a true connection to the Symphony. This is so they may pervert it from the inside out. It can be said that without Kronos forcing Yves into a stalemate, the angels may have already won the War.

Dissonance

A demon may earn notes of dissonance by acting against their nature, or against their Superior’s Word. For servitors of Fate, they earn dissonance by helping humans achieve their Destiny. The flipside of this is equally damaging to the servitor, as if they prevent someone from meeting their Fate, they will also earn dissonance. However, this only applies to those who have discovered the Fate Through the Fated Future attunement, or their futures being revealed by the Prince of Fate himself. So the ignorant need not fear reprisal, but you will not be in the prince’s favor if you unwittingly prevent them from meeting their Fate.

Band Attunements

Servitors of Kronos are granted these band attunements, or band specific powers, at character creation. Balseraphs are restricted. You may choose to emulate the resonance of any one Choir of angel. But you will also earn dissonance from it. Djinn are also restricted. They will know when an object of their attunement is going to be destroyed within 24 hours. Also, their attunement to an object negates a Cherub’s attunement. Calabin are restricted. They begin play with no Discord. And when they use their resonance, they can make the target appear as though they are a rotting corpse or dusty pile of bones. Habbalah are restricted. When they use the Servitor Attunement of Fated Future, they know which emotion will inflict the most pain on the target. Lilim are partially restricted. They are able to see discord in the eyes of others. They may also add their Celestial Forces when attempting to charm with their geas. Shedim are restricted. Once a day, they are able to alter their hosts’ perception of time and mortality. This reduces the victims will by the demons Celestial Forces when resisting their dark urges. Impudites can touch a person and know their past from their own perspective with a Perception roll.

Servitor Attunements

If you have served Kronos well, he may award you with Servitor Attunements. Fated Future allows the demon to spend one Essence and tell at a glance if someone has great potential for a Destiny or Fate. If they spend two Essence, they will know the great destiny and dark fate. Temporal Projection launches the victim through time and space. They must be within 2 yards, and they may resist with a Will roll. They will vanish from the corporeal plane for a number of hours equal to the demon’s Celestial Forces, times the Essence spent. They will then reappear  a random distance away times the Essence spent. Roll a d6.

Distinctions

Kronos will also award Distinctions to his favored Servitors. These are Knight of the Winged Chariot, a demon always knows the exact time. In addition they know the age of any inanimate object they touch. If they spend an Essence and a Perception roll, they may find the darkest deed in any object’s past. Captain of the Infernal Hourglass allows the demon to spend an Essence to perform an hours-worth of non-combat tasks, in half the time. Two Essence allows others to do the same. And finally Baron of the Book of Days grants detailed, true knowledge of world-wide human affairs for any century in the last millennia. It may even be granted more than once for other periods of time.

Relations

Relations in Hell are never simple. Kronos is not allied with any other Demon Princes. He is associated with Asmodeus, Baal, Beleth, and Nybbas. He is hostile to Andrealphus, and Haagenti. And he is the enemy of Kobal and Valefor.

Basic Rites

There are some basic rites Kronos grants his Servitors to regain Essence. The first is to spend six hours observing time. The second is to prevent someone from achieving their destiny. And the third is to help someone meet their fate.

Chance of Invocation

Kronos has a base change of one to invoke him. However there are other things that you may leverage for success. Have a quartz watch. Hold a wind-up clock. Have a handwritten autobiography. Be near a century-old, working, grandfather clock. Be near an incredibly large clock. And finally be near an atomic clock of unprecedented accuracy.

You can see that Kronos is a prince who is deeply concerned about bringing mortals to their dark Fates. Serving him may make for an interesting campaign that is focused on Destiny and Fate and the machinations of mortals. Perhaps you need to stop an invention or social movement? I would definitely consider playing a Demon of Kronos in any one shot or campaign, and you should too!
