Opening Monologue
What a year this is shaping into. Yea, already! With federal workers not being paid for their work, or having to make decisions between medication or food, this government shutdown the Trump administration is ‘proud to own’ has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, there is no middle class. With 69% of Americans having less than $1k in savings and 40% of Americans unable to handle a $400 dollar emergency, the American form of crony capitalism has failed. We are still reeling from the Great Recession and the Trump administration has pushed us within a hair’s width of another recession. The American Dream is just that…. a dream.
There’s blame to go around, the Obama administration reduced our oversea presence, yet ramped up our military industrial complex. The Trump administration has gone beyond even that. He is in the middle of multiple trade wars, criminal investigations and lawsuits. The top 1% who benefited most from Trump’s supposed tax reform hold 38% of all wealth, while the bottom 90% of all Americans harbor 72.8% of all debt. This means the top 1% hold more wealth than the bottom 90% of all Americans! This, a booming economy does not make!
President Trump has done nothing but strip regulations, erode American trust worldwide, and enacted measures that favor Saudi Arabia and Russia over our western allies! He’s even suggested we leave NATO! We all listened while an American resident journalist was murdered by the Saudi prince’s henchmen and our ‘law and order’ president did nothing because he wanted to continue selling them bombs and firearms to continue murdering Houthi rebels in Yemen. But it’s okay because NATO stopped counting the civilian deaths three years ago after having reached 10 thousand, with the current total hovering over 50k victims. This is just the tip of the humanitarian catastrophe iceberg people.
But I suppose I shouldn’t discuss this because some who see this show title will share their outrage without actually looking beyond a headline, and that can have real consequences. Yea, we are talking about call out culture. We pretend it’s only on the left or the right but the truth is, it’s your fault too. The individual watching this stream, the person who just looks at the headline and begins to fume, the rageaholic nation of sheep we have created who take no time considering both sides of an issue, let alone considering a more uncomfortable third side, no, even Satanists are at fault here.
I once believed we Satanists truly were different. That we would question all things. After all, my discussion about Social Justice Warriors or The Extreme Left and Safe Spaces garnered nothing but praise and mild suggestion of alternative perspectives, but the second I have a title of Spiritual Satanist or Toxic Masculinity, well the Satanic Trolls came out from under the bridge to show their good guy badges in one hand and official hurt pussy cards in the other. Yes, those who ‘champion’ thinking about a topic are now enforcing the edict that the topic simply does not exist so we must not even speak it. It’s as if this absurd Harry Potter fan fiction version of Satanism that some of you enjoy sharing were real. You’re a wizard Harry, they are muggles and you are inherently better. We must not speak the name of he who must not be named. Bullshit! I’ve been labeled a bleeding heart liberal, communist, fascist, asshole and more. The Asshole part is true, but the rest are reflections of your own lack of creativity and vision.
I demand we reclaim our natural Satanic state of discussing whatever-the-fuck- we deem worthy discussing if for no other reason than to discover its true worthlessness or validity. Hell we may even discover a third side if we are actually open to the possibility. But hey, what do I know… I’m just a Satanist, not an antifa supporting or hating, alt right championing or demonizing, sheep in wolf’s clothing. It is only when we stop to examine why something makes us uncomfortable, that we can truly learn something about ourselves, and perhaps the subject at hand, and that leads us directly into the topic of the evening: Outrage Culture. But first allow me to introduce my fellow panelists this evening.
Our first guest has a PHD in Clinical Psychology and works with a focus on disabilities, LGBT and low socioeconomic status rural & urban populations. Her research focus is in disabilities and studies fandoms and the use of fantasy in positive coping. It’s my pleasure to introduce friend of the show, Witch Doctor Troj.
Our next guest has an M.A. in religious studies, and is a PHD candidate. Her focus is on western esotericism, ritual and religion & popular culture.
