- Dunk, a young squire, buries his deceased mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, keeping his sword and three horses. After defecating outdoors, he travels to nearby Ashford town for an upcoming tournament.
- At an inn, Dunk meets a bald child who asks to squire for him in the tournament, but Dunk refuses.
- After reaching Ashford, Dunk meets Plummer, Ashford’s steward, and requests entry to the tournament, but needs someone to vouch for him.
- Dunk learns Ser Manfred Dondarrion, whom Arlan served, is in Ashford; two prostitutes say Manfred is sleeping, and call Dunk an impoverished “hedge knight”.
- While perambulating, Dunk meets the hostile knight Ser Steffon Fossoway and his squire, Raymun Fossoway, and watches a fire-breathing-dragon-puppet show performed by Tanselle.
- Raymun later takes Dunk to Ser Lyonel Baratheon’s tent, where he feasts and dances with Lyonel, but he downplays Dunk’s chances in the tournament.
- Dunk finds Manfred, who refuses to vouch for him.
- He then reencounters the bald child, who calls himself Egg, and Dunk names himself Ser Duncan the Tall. Dunk accepts Egg as his squire, and they witness a shooting star, which Egg claims will bring good luck; Dunk asks if it is just for them.
