About DireLands Fantasy Campaign Setting
DireLands is a system agnostic, dark fantasy tabletop roleplaying campaign setting. It was created by Adam P. Campbell in 2024. DireLands is set in a land that is in the final century of an ice age that saw the rise of the Witch-Queen who subjugated the three realms’ populations and cast out the demi-human races. The Triumvirate rose in the last century and liberated two of the three nations, but after their victory, they have become corrupt themselves.

One could say that the Gaullix are a result of the men from the west, or Beàrrta colonising and migrating east and north, throwing the first nations people off their land, enslaving them, or outright murdering them. It is believed that many cultures were completely wiped out in the expansionism of the Beàrrta. While the southern cultures suffered at their hands, the northern cultures banded together in 1623 A.M., or ‘After Men Arrived from the West’. They faced off against the Beàrrta on battlefields all across what is now Bressus and Locaston, but in the end, the military might of the Beàrrta overcame the first-nations people, even in this unified front, and in their defeat the makings of the Gaullix were born.
Now, modern scholars of the Jhion Order would tell you that the Gaullix are nothing more than monsters who threaten the safety and security of Bressus. But the origins of the Gaullix are anything but offensive. After the devastation at Klausser Fields outside of Krex in the Grux Range, the first nations people knew they needed to understand the art of war if they ever wanted to defeat the Beàrrta. They looked to the monastic Order of the Fist, a female only convent which worships the gods through military training, and enlisted many of the Sisters of the Fist to act as instructors on the finer points of war. But what they didn’t expect was the quarter-century rotation of the moon Dòiche to unleash a horde of cosmic aberrations as it made its closest approach to their planet, Ciar-mhonadh, and open the magical moon bridge the locals called slighe (sleigh). High up in the now glacier-covered Yizis Range, these cosmic monstrosities assaulted Faulest in the War of Dominance in 1593 A.M.
This war took the better part of a decade to squelch, decimating entire communities, but what it did do was force the northern first nations people to hone in their military structure and tactics. At the end of the war, the Gaullix were officially formed. This military order was led by the brutal Oich-de, a half-orc general of the Konfresh region. His empress was the former Xintra tribal shaman Hoigh-Ju, and her connection to the Veas Lekar, an ancient order of cosmic sorcerers, gave her the foreknowledge as they studied the procession of the stars, discerning the optimum time to strike back against the Beàrrta, and ultimately herald in the arrival of the Quawl.
While the Beàrrta were forming Bressus as a formal nation, and the disparate tribes of the now Caelia nation formed their Biel Gos, the Gaullix honed their skills and built machines of war never seen on Ciar-mhonadh. It was the calm before the storm, for as the Gaullix watched the skies and waited for the arrival of the Quawl, the continued building, training, and planning their revenge against Bressus. As the years passed, new leaders came to take control and they would wage wars against Bressus and even Caelia, expanding their border. Then the climate began to shift. In under a hundred years, starting in 902 A.M., the glacial north spread south into Faulest, driving mass migration as the freezing temperatures spread south forcing those who worked the land to abandon their fields and the fawna to follow. The massive glaciers completely disrupted life on Faulest and with it, the coming of the Quawl.
The destabilization of Faulest due to this new Ice Age drove regional conflicts all over Faulest and the Gaullix’s military might decimated all in their wake. The borders of Bressus and Caelia were constantly under assault, and Locaston’s territory expanded south at a rapid rate. Then the stars aligned and the Witch-Queen revealed herself. She quickly took power, eliminating the Emperess Cuscoi-He, and drove all male sorcerers underground, outlawing their use of cosmic magic on penalty of death. This decimated the Veas Lekar, leaving them a shadow of their former might, and she sent the Gaulix south on a war path with power never before witnessed on Ciar-mhonadh.
It took nearly a hundred years, but the Witch-Queen with her Gaullix seized control of the three nations, outlawed all magic that wasn’t directly under her control, and subdued all demi-races who were not part of the Gaullix, first as slaves, then when they had too many of them, they exterminated the rest, forcing them to flee Faulest or go underground for safety. This was an era of darkness that lasted over five hundred years. It wouldn’t be until the Frozen Epoch beginning in 1 F.A., or ‘Frozen Age’, that the Triumvirate was able to unify rebel cells and strike back against the Gaullix and Witch Queen, ultimately destroying her.
This left the Gaullix isolated, even in their nation of Locaston, and they withdrew to the Grux Range to their cities of Klintick, Griiph, and Szesz, and began to rebuild their forces. For the remnant Veas Lekar believed the Quawl would return again, this time coming out of the Wildlands. So they watched, and waited for their Witch-Queen’s return. All the while building up their armies, war machines, and plans to strike back at the Triumvirate, Biel Gos, and free-peoples of Faulest.
The Gaullix, now under the rule of General Xii-Ghen, has spy networks all throughout the three nations, and he knows that the Witch-Queen, while believed to be defeated, is in fact still here, in spirit. She will rise again and lead them all to victory. Will you stand up against the Gaullix in your home campaign, or join them as they retake Faulest under the Witch-Queen’s banner? The future of these DireLands are in your hands.
