- The first two segments of Unorthodoxy had been a joy to listen to, as they were both informative and entertaining. The previous segment’s discussion on hidden or occult knowledge evoked memories of my own studies of the Masonic and occult sources drawn upon by Joseph Smith Jr. in his founding of Mormonism and deriving Mormon doctrines.
- With such a history that would in many Christian eyes be seen to be heretical or even Satanic from their perspective, could you comment on the perceived notion that Mormonism has become mainstream? With the significant social and theological differences that separate Mormonism from standard American forms of Christianity? How well have Christians honestly come to accept Mormonism as their own, despite obvious differences such as the Book of Mormon and unique dogmas? This seemed especially significant since the Mitt Romney presidential campaign.
Researching this has been fraught with whitewash and evasions, and finding documented scholarship on this topic has not been easy. Thus your insights would be tremendously illuminating.
