9sense Letters

  • Hi Adam,

Back in late July, on episode 28 July, XLVIII A.S., you spoke upon the Eleventh Satanic Law which states; When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

The aspect you took it from, was from the purely subjective perspective (as I think it was intended to be taken) and that perhaps there is some portion of responsibility that may fall upon the individual (you) which needs to change to better the situation. But what about stepping into another’s situation where you feel it necessary to assert yourself?

Recently, I was discussing the Rules with another individual, and a scenario came up in regards to violence and assault which touched upon the Eleventh Rule.

“What if you’re out in public with your family at a park, enjoying the sun and having a good time, when you see two of the other parents get into an argument and the man starts to knock around and hit the woman. (This could be vice versa.) There are children around, and none of the other adults are doing anything. Your children are looking on and worried (my daughter, at almost 3 years old, would probably scream and yell at him to stop and call him a bad man). Considering the violence displayed and the audience, would you insert yourself in an attempt to stop it? What would you do? And if you did insert yourself, wouldn’t this go against the 11th Law of not bothering anyone?”

Personally, this is a scenario I’ve imagined as a possibility while out and about, so I knew how I would respond. My answer was thus, “I would first tell my wife to call the Police, and then I would slowly approach the couple and shout for him to stop. If he didn’t stop, I would warn him that I would intercede and restrain him from further violence. If he continued, I would attempt to stop him. This is course assuming he didn’t already get pissed, or annoyed and come after me instead. I would attempt to keep them apart, while not becoming a target myself and that would be where lesser magic would come in. Mentioning the Police can help, pointing out the crowd and the children, etc. Anything to prevent further displays of needless aggression and defuse the situation.”

Yes, there is a certain nuance to domestic violence, and I’m fully aware that often times the victim turns upon the “good Samaritan” and I am prepared for that. The police have been called, I gave warnings and then sought to assist. But, as much as it may seem to be, I am not only stepping in on the woman’s behalf but more importantly on my families. Not to mention the other children out there. I do not think this is hypocritical in regards to the 11th Rule, because through the actions of the couple to bring such violence to a public place they have made it my business. Allowing such violence and acts of aggression against another, unprovoked and uncalled for is traumatizing to a child, and it is not a notion they should get in their mind that it is acceptable to act in such a way. Any action that young children see which goes unopposed, no matter how fearful of it they are, could then be seen as an acceptable practice. Not only is it criminal, but also not the norm of how those in a relationship should act in regards to one another.

Would I expect everyone to act as I would? No. Not everyone is capable or equipped to deal with such a scenario. Those not comfortable with violence, or people lacking the skillset to protect themselves and other people are better left on the sidelines to phone the authorities and protect their own. But personally, I would not stand by while another is victimized and assaulted if I felt comfortable doing so.

You are a family man, so I felt that you would appreciate and be able to fully relate with this scenario. We may have different opinions on the matter, but I think it is something worth exploring and touching upon.

I would be most interested in hearing yours and any of the other 9Sense contributors opinions on this “What If?” scenario.

    HS!
