9sense Letters

  • Opponents to Satanists
  • Hi, folks; you discussed in your latest podcast the question of, “Who’re the greatest opposers to Satanism right now?” I agree with you that the Satanic equivalent of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is a great obstacle to Satanism today, but from my personal experience I would say that another significant obstacle to Satanism is the contemporary Pagan movement. Paganism today is, for the most part, very egalitarian, and as a response to the Satanic Panic is as an institution automatically opposed to Satanism… of course, the pedestrian Satanism that conflates Satanism with the Illuminati, hidden signs and symbols in music and movies, and pedophilia among world leaders, celebrities, etc. is also a challenge to the definition of Satanism, but that’s an entirely different discussion.
  • Dr. LaVey wrote at length that Satanism will always be open to travellers on the Right Hand Path if they’re willing to be honest about what they’re doing and acknowledge that they’re playing the devil’s game, but the institutional opposition among nearly all stripes of modern Pagans is effectively teaching occultists, witches and warlocks, and others who share similar thoughts about the use of lesser and greater magic, the pre-eminence of the self, and the application of one’s personal will over submissive circumstances that the Satanism and the Church of Satan are shallow, stupid, and misguided.
  • Polytheism is also quite the rage for the past 5 years or so in the modern Paganism movement, and everybody who believes in the Old Gods (or any gods, really) is racing to find the coolest or most powerful imaginary friend. This tidal influence teaching that Paganism is by its definition polytheistic creates immediate obstacles to communication between Pagans and Satanists, and reinforces this notion that you can’t practice less or greater magic without believing in deity. Paganism is, in many ways, the “New Christianity” described by Dr. LaVey.
  • Speaking as a former traveller on the right hand path, I can testify that the animus among Pagans for Satanists is as strong, or possibly stronger, than among Christians. Like it or not, the contemporary Pagan movement is very active online, deeply interconnected, vocal, and is defining Satanism as a pejorative. I’m a new listener to the 9sense podcast, so I don’t know that you folks haven’t already covered it, but a segment exploring the relationship between contemporary Paganism and Satanism would be fascinating.
  • Another fascinating (or at least entertaining) exploration would be a look at how Satanism is defined by Christian churches in Africa. In the USA, the Satanic Panic may have waned in the early 90’s, but it’s alive and well in Africa where fear of Satanism by churchgoers, and the threat of Satanism as a tool used by church leaders, is alive and well.
