    • While some churches took Trump’s order to “open up right now” as a green light, other faith leaders said they would “absolutely not” be moved by the president’s proclamation.
    • President Donald Trump’s call on Friday to reopen houses of worship sent a green light to some pastors to resume in-person services on Sunday, even in the face of contrary bans from governors.
    • governors have great latitude during times of emergency, and sovereign authority under the constitution even in normal times. But Hope said that she intends to hold in-person services on Sunday, thanks to the support from the president.
    • Calvary Chapel pastor Ken Graves called the centralized lockdown powers being utilized by “leftist” governors as “the spirit of anti-Christ.”
    • A Maine pastor unsuccessfully sued the state’s governor to hold in-person services
    • Several California churches joined together on May 8 to file a 128-page civil rights lawsuit seeking an injunction and restraining order allowing in-person services in the state. A San Diego federal judge turned down that request.
    • on Friday, in a 2-1 decision, an appeals court rejected the request once more, writing in an unsigned opinion that the churches’ First Amendment rights were not violated because the ban was not religiously motivated.
    • “We’re dealing here with a highly contagious and often fatal disease for which there presently is no known cure,” the judges wrote, adding, from a 1949 Supreme Court ruling: “If a ‘court does not temper its doctrinaire logic with a little practical wisdom, it will convert the constitutional Bill of Rights into a suicide pact.’”
    • There are still many pastors and priests who refuse to hold service to protect their communities.

    • Samantha Clarke said she was “split open pretty good” two weeks ago when she was allegedly assaulted by a customer while police say she was working at a Big 5 Sporting Goods store.
    • Earlier this month, in the middle of the pandemic, she says a woman calling from Tracy asked her staff to hold a swimming pool for her.
    • “We told them that we would hold it for 30 minutes, they showed up 45 minutes later and the pool was gone,” Clarke recalled. “So the lady was upset, understandably. I could understand that she was upset.”
    • Clarke says the woman started throwing items off the counter, hit her in the face with something metal in her hand and casually walked out of the store with her baby’s stroller in tote.
    • She said the woman even took the time to cover up her license plates on the way out.
    • disrespect has been an ongoing problem after they began implementing rules in the store like social distancing, requiring masks and limiting the number of people allowed inside.
    • Clarke created a Facebook page called “Retail life during Covid-19” to help gain awareness of the struggles of retail workers working during the pandemic.
    • Clarke said. “I had one lady threaten to burn our store down because we couldn’t take back a return.”
    • “I just want to say to be patient and show a little kindness to your retail worker, cashier,” Clarke said. “A nice thank you goes a long way.”
    • If you have any information about the suspect, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636. You can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
