About In Nomine

Written by Derek Pearcy + Illustrated by Dan Smith

Edited by Jeff Koke, Steve Jackson, and Susan Pinsonneault

Cover art by John Zeleznik (first printing) and Christopher Shy (second printing)

In Nomine is a modern roleplaying game in which the players take the part of celestial beings – angels and demons – as they struggle for control of humanity and themselves. The celestials, powerful though they may be, are merely pawns in a much larger game being played by their Superiors, the Archangels and Demon Princes. Based on the best-selling French RPG by the wonderfully diabolical Croc!

In Nomine won the Origins Award for Best Graphic Presentation of a Roleplaying Game, Adventure, or Supplement of 1997.

Discussion

About

There are few demon Princes, let alone demons with the sexual appetite of Andrealphus. To his close friends, he is Andre, the prince of Lust and he is the perfect Impudite. If you require a hot-handed and cold-hearted creature, Andre or his demonic Servitors are the ones to call. Andre prefers worldly missions of glamor and politics, and when subtlety is required, his many Servants are eager and ready.

Andrealphus and his Servitors are all well-liked in Hell by those with a taste for pleasure. Point in fact, Andre looks down on those demons who don’t enjoy overindulgence and even those with a more monstrous appearance. He prefers to surround himself, and engage with only the pretty people. It can be a challenge contacting him, as he is frequently occupied by one rendezvous or another.

Recently Andrealphus and Nybbas, the Prince of Media, have been conspiring to create a new paradigm of religion. They want to create a conjunction between selfish freedom and entertainment in the cracks of the corporate state before the end of the next century. Until that plan comes to fruition, Andre’s Servitors are busy teaching humans that sometimes it’s good just to lose yourself in the pleasure of the flesh.

Dissonance

Acting within one’s Resonance or nature is integral to all Angels and Demons, but for Servitors, they must also act within the Resonance of their Superior’s Word. Demons of Andrealphus must stay physically close to their victims, but emotionally distant. It is dissonant for them to feel any sympathy for a human, and they are forbidden from feeling or showing concern for the fleshly beings surrounding them. To the Servitors of Andrealphus, mortals only exist to be ruthlessly manipulated. This does not preclude a Servitor from faking it however.

Band Attunements

Servitors of Andrealphus are granted band attunements. These abilities are gifts to his faithfuls. Balseraphs can force a victim to enjoy any single physical sensation they may choose to inflict upon them, for a number of minutes equal to their Celestial Forces. They may attempt to resist, but failure to do so may result in a permanent state of pleasure. The Djinn attunement is partially restricted. These Servitors are able to place someone in and keep them in a state of post-coital afterglow, making them susceptible to the demon’s will. They must maintain contact after sex, but then they can make the mortal willing to do or witness nearly anything. The Calabim attunement is restricted. They can cause damage to any being they touch, even ones protected by a corporeal vessel. This cannot cause the loss of a force however. The Habbalah attunement is also restricted. They will never suffer a reversal of their resonance if resisted. They may also add their Ethereal Forces if in physical contact to their Resonance roll. Lilim’s attunements are also restricted. These are Andre’s favorite Servitors. They are able to sense the need of physical contact in a mortal through touch. The restricted Shedim attunement allows them to enter any host experiencing an orgasm with a touch, and may add their Corporeal Forces to the Resonance roll. And finally Impudites’ Attunement is restricted. They may add their Corporeal Forces toward using their resonance on anyone they have ad sex with.

Servitor Attunements

If you please Andrealphus through your service, he may reward you with a Servitor Attunement. Dark Desire allows a demon to imprint any desire on a person’s psyche. If they fail their Will roll, they will only be able to think about that desire for hours equal to the demon’s total Forces. The second Servitor Attunement is the Kiss of Death. This allows a demon to attempt to kill someone they are having sex with. This causes damage equal to the check digit times twice the Essence spent.

Distinctions

Through further Service Andrealphus may grant his Servitors Distinctions. The first of which is Knight of Infernal Pleasures. They are able to detect the individual’s degree of sexual fulfillment, both in the moment and in their life as a whole. The second is Captain of Diabolical Delight. They are able to bring instant pleasure with a touch, increasing their reaction roll by 4. And finally the Baron of Eternal Ecstasy. They are able to make someone they’ve seduced do anything sexual, even if they wouldn’t normally be open to it.

Relations

As one might suspect, Andrealphus is quite happy to ally with those who would further his Word. He is hostile with Haagenti who wishes to broaden gluttony over lust, and Baal. He is the enemy of Saminga, associated with Valefor, and allied with Lilith and Nybbas.

Basic Rites

There are some Basic Rites Servitors of Andrealphus may enact to gain an essence. The first is to spend an hour participating in sexual acts. The second is to spend an hour reading an illustrated magazine, in a public space, while smiling pleasantly at passers-by.

Chance of Invocation

It is challenging to invoke Andrealphus, with a beginning Target Number of 1. But there are a few things a Demon may do to increase their invocation success. These include scrawling a dirty picture on a wall, having a well used issue of Playboy magazine, having sex with a good looking person, having sex with an extraordinarily beautiful person, having sex infront of an audience, or ten people having sex for an audience.

As you can tell, the Prince of Lust lives up to his word, and if your players are emotionally mature enough, this would be a wonderful option for any Servitor to explore. It would create awkward interactions and fulfilling, explosive moments for the players and or Game Master to role-play. You should definitely include Andrealphus, the Prince of Lust in your game, even if for only a scene.
