Discussion
Since antediluvian days, mankind has whispered about the monsters hiding in the shadows. While many horrors exist, none are more feared than those with an insatiable hunger—the true apex predators of civilization. For most of history, these beings were thought to be purely psychological creations. You see, humanity has buried the fear of being hunted deep into its DNA from an epoch of evolutionary survival. What truly separates humanity from animals is our imagination; through our dreams, desires, and terrors, we created both gods and monsters. As civilization grew, these monsters seemingly took a backseat to “reality,” but they remained active in the Ethereal realm, forever watching.
The truth of their origin is far darker than mere folklore. While humanity may have dreamed them into existence, something indifferent gave them agency. I’m talking about the Void—the original state of all existence, which is complete, silent, and indifferent. The Void uses humanity’s Ethereal creations to undermine existence and destroy reality from within. This creates a terrifying twist of agency: human fear provided the blueprint, but the Void provided the power. Even the Celestial powers have no control over these manifestations of the human psyche.
The history of the “Vampyr” is organized by a rigid hierarchy of blood, determined by the generation of the being. Legend speaks of an original source that created five children. Each vampire family is derived from one of these five children, with their specific strengths and weaknesses inspired by the region of the world where they originated. The older the vampire, and the older their creator, the more potent they become. This potency allows them to tap into the Void through the Ethereal to manifest unknown, terrifying powers.
In the Ævum Malum setting, the folklore surrounding vampires is a double-edged sword. Their powers are fueled by mankind’s fears, while their vulnerabilities are powered by mankind’s hopes. They possess incredible supernatural prowess, including enhanced physicality, supernatural agility, and the ability to fascinate humans with their minds. High-level manipulation even allows them to transform into rats, wolves, or bats, or even take flight. However, they are not truly immortal in the way Celestials are. They require a heart to pump stolen blood through their system, which is why a stake through the heart holds them in stasis. Furthermore, weapons of hope—like fire, sunlight, and religious faith—can consume or destroy them.
Whether they are the ultimate “Big Bad” or the player characters themselves, the Children of the Night are a force to be reckoned with. They remain hidden in secret societies because humanity refuses to acknowledge monsters in their “sanitized” modern suburbs. Most are solo hunters, and while small groups occasionally work together, they are prone to turning on one another—a trait inherited from the fractured psyche of their human creators. They are the ultimate stalkers, masters of manipulation, waiting in the darkness of the city for the desperate effort to delay the inevitable unmaking of the world.
The survival of the Children of the Night depends entirely on the Veil of Indifference—a psychological byproduct of the modern world. In an era of surveillance and science, humanity has traded its ancient instincts for a comfortable, “sanitized” denial. This collective apathy acts as a secondary shroud for the Vampyr, allowing them to operate within the highest echelons of corporate boardrooms and the lowest gutters of the inner city without fear of discovery. They do not merely hide in the dark; they hide in plain sight, camouflaged by the very skepticism they helped cultivate. By manipulating the media and dismissing sightings as urban legends or drug-induced hallucinations, they ensure that the only people who believe in monsters are those already marginalized by society—the “crazy,” the “desperate,” and the soon-to-be-dead.
Physiologically, a vampire is less a biological entity and more of an Ethereal anchor for the Void’s cold intent. Because they are fueled by the collective nightmares of the living, their presence creates a “static” in the local Symphony that sensitive individuals—and certain Celestial beings—can perceive as an unnatural dread. This resonance is what allows them to sense the life force of others; they aren’t just looking for blood, they are tracking the “heat” of a soul that still belongs to reality. However, this connection is a heavy burden. To exist as a manifestation of fear is to be eternally separated from the “Bright Dream” of existence. They are the ultimate exiles, forever standing on the precipice of the Void, drawing just enough stolen life from their victims to keep from being pulled back into the absolute, silent nothingness that granted them their power.
