In Memoriam
James Durrant
1977-1993
James was the first person to ever approach me and show interests in me as an individual. He was an outcast himself, and I don’t know if he sensed that in me as well, or if he was just trying to find someone to be friends with in our 7th grade gym class in Churchill Jr. High. We became inseparable from that moment on. Because we were both bused in to the school we never hung out after school, so every morning when we would meet up at school we had these big grins seeing each other.
It was also because of this separation I never knew the full extent of his depression. He had told me many times about it, but I thought it was like my own, and didn’t realize it was in fact much worse. We shared a locker in Skyline High School, and one day everything was missing. I went to the administration office to complain and I was sat down and told that James had killed himself the night before, and that they were going to make an announcement shortly to the school.
That moment changed everything for me. I had never dealt with loss on that scale, or death personally in any way. It took me years to get over, and I still think of this young man who first exposed me to smoking cigarettes and weed. He celebrated my artwork and even bought some pieces from me. He was incredibly supportive and generous and I will never forget the impact he had on me.
I will forever miss you. Thank you for being my friend.
