About Project Hail Mary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Now a major motion picture starring Ryan Gosling, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard
A lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this “propulsive” (Entertainment Weekly), cinematic thriller full of suspense, humor, and fascinating science—from the author of The Martian.
HUGO AWARD FINALIST • NEW YORK TIMES READER PICK: 100 BEST BOOKS OF THE 21ST CENTURY • ONE OF THE YEAR’S BEST BOOKS: Parade, Newsweek, New York Public Library, Polygon, Shelf Awareness, She Reads, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.
Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.
All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.
Or does he?
Hailed by USA Today as “an epic story of redemption, discovery, and cool speculative sci-fi,” Project Hail Mary is an irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver.

- starring Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller,
- with Drew Goddard writing (his second Andy Weir adaptation)
- and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directing.
- It released to theaters on March 20, 2026.
- takes place on the Hail Mary spacecraft and is intercut with flashbacks as Grace’s memory returns.
- Plot
- The Global Crisis: “The Petrova Line”
- The Threat: The Sun is losing its shine. A dimming sun means a global ice age and total human extinction within 30 years.
- The Culprit: Astrophage. Single-celled “space-algae” that eats solar radiation and breeds near Venus.
- The “Solution”: Earth creates the Hail Mary, a starship powered by the very thing killing the sun (Astrophage). It’s a one-way suicide mission to Tau Ceti, the only nearby star that seems immune to the infection.
- The Reluctant Hero: Ryland Grace
- The Wake-up: Grace wakes up from a coma with amnesia and two dead crewmates. He has to “science” his way into remembering he’s on a spaceship.
- The Twist: Grace wasn’t a brave volunteer. He was a junior high teacher forced onto the ship by Eva Stratt (the woman given “God-mode” authority over Earth) because the actual experts died in an accident.
- The Stakes: He has to find out why Tau Ceti is immune and send the data back via “Beetle” probes. If he fails, Earth dies.
- The Ultimate Bromance: Enter “Rocky”
- First Contact: Grace encounters an alien ship, the Blip-A, from the system 40 Eridani.
- Rocky: An eyeless, spider-like engineer who communicates through musical notes. He’s the sole survivor of his crew.
- The Team-up: Humans and “Eridians” (Rocky’s race) are facing the same extinction. They dock ships and spend months learning each other’s languages and physics to solve the Astrophage problem together.
- The Science of the “Taumoeba”
- The Discovery: On the planet Adrian, they find Taumoeba—a natural predator that eats Astrophage. This is the “cure.”
- The Disaster: While breeding the Taumoeba to be more resilient, they accidentally make it capable of passing through Xenonite (the Eridian super-material).
- The Split: They fix the leaks, say their goodbyes, and head back to their respective home worlds.
- The Moral Choice & The Ending
- The Crisis: Mid-journey, Grace realizes Rocky’s ship is leaking Taumoeba. Rocky is going to lose all his fuel and die in deep space, and his planet will never be saved.
- The Sacrifice: Grace has a choice: Go home to Earth and be a hero, or turn around to save Rocky and face a slow death on an alien planet (since Eridian food is toxic to humans).
- The “Beetles”: Grace sends the “cure” back to Earth via the automated probes and turns his ship around to save his friend.
- The Aftermath: 16 years later, Grace is alive on Erid (eating lab-grown food). He gets word that Earth’s sun is back to full strength. He ends the book exactly where he started: a science teacher, just for alien kids this time.
- The Global Crisis: “The Petrova Line”
